My very own global media empire? I feel a little bit
unqualified seeing as the closest I’ve come to having a job in the media is the
fact that my boyfriend works for The Age… unless temping as a receptionist at
the now defunct News of the World offices for 2 weeks while on my gap year in London counts?
In all seriousness though my media empire would integrate news
and opinion in both video and text formats.
I wouldn’t want to associate with the term ‘mass media’ which, according
to Stevens, “undermines culture (2003 p.56)”.
In order to do this I’d ensure at least attempt to show various points of
view by featuring writings from all points on the political spectrum for
opinion pieces rather than become a single agenda pushing empire like Fox News.
I believe that in order to reach media empire status you need integration of your source of
media into everyday lives and into the existing sources of media as well as having
valued staff. Taking a page out of
Google’s book this would involve recruiting the best and brightest and ensuring
loyalty through allowing them to work creatively whether that includes working
wirelessly or ensuring a large level of autonomy.

This post is well written and I found it interesting to relate to how other media empires such as Fox News operate, as well as some of their flaws that you would avoid if in charge of your own empire. If you were to redevelop this blog you could perhaps expand on the "agenda pushing" of Fox News. You also could have improved this post by referencing Fox's agenda pushing ways; as without one it just seems like your own personal opinion rather than fact. Aside from that it was an enjoyable read.
ReplyDeleteThis blog is written in a very colloquial manner, in which i tended to find more appealing than other overly academic post. The fact that you wrote in a conversational manner, actually represented your point in a more clearer and more relatable way. However despite your tone, i initially found the academic references and discussion of the topic to be lost in the way you approached the blog. In saying that towards the end when you get all technical you definitely redeem yourself as you explained what a media empire is, gave us examples to better understand the topic and connected your interpretation with the content. Overall good read.
ReplyDeleteI really like your idea of a Media Empire and how you have analysed all the aspects such as operating similarly to companies like Google. I especially like your use of the term ‘mass media’ and how you would focus on disassociating your empire from it. The main thing I drew from our blog was how you utilized your experiences at ‘News of the World’ and how you would want to distance your empire from that model.
ReplyDeleteI like some of the ideas you have presented for your own media empire. I think they are relevant to everyday lives and appropriate for the modern age. I think trying to integrate news and opinion into text and video formats is brave. While that idea has the ability to spark great debates on various news topics, the downside is it has the ability to create conflict as well. I like that you would ensure loyalty to your employees as I believe that a happy employee produces the best results in the workplace
