Globalisation has led
to a communications and transportation revolution whereby travel is becoming
faster, cheaper and more accessible than it was ever previously which allows
for individuals and families to migrate in a manner that is easier than ever
before.
Morrison (2001 p.71) describes a shift refugee
policy (and therefore public perception) in the European Union from an issue of
human rights to an issue immigration control.
I’d argue that a similar pattern is also occurring in Australia, which
is easily seen when comparing the settlement Vietnamese refugees (post Vietnam
War) and the parliamentary crisis that is currently being played out in the
Australian media.
There are sections of Australia that are
currently worried about the destruction of our 'culture' due
to this ‘inundation’ of differing cultures displaying such sophisticated signs and slogans as:
(Crikey, 2010 n.p)
People seem to be forgetting some of the amazing
things that new cultures bring us. We
get to experience new types of food, music and dress among other things. Globalisation and multiculturalism allows for Australians to
experience the unique features of many cultures by simply visiting a different
street or suburb.

Hi Eloise! I thought you had demonstrated some good points and an interesting argument. You’ve outlined the negative effects of globalisation in terms of racism and ignorance which is a really important yet sad and repulsive part of the world that many people are oblivious to. I like your piece overall but the one thing I may critic was that it was slightly quite general. Overall I thought you produced a great blog with a stimulating visual.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your blog post as you related what you read, with things you have seen in the media. How communications and transportation has enabled people to migrate, from one country to another, as the benefit of of experiencing new cultures can change our perceptions of people from different points in the world. You noted some pro's and con's that happen to be experienced through globalisation, with refugees and asylum seekers being caught in the middle of government policies.
ReplyDeleteHi Eloise,
ReplyDeleteI think you have picked a great topic to discuss in reference to the idea of making cultures. I agree with your argument, and you have backed it up with some good examples. My only criticism is that perhaps you could aim to be more specific and describe the certain sections of Australia where this prejudice takes place, and you might also embed some links to other sources for further evidence. Great work!
I like the topic of your blog particularly the statement you make about people needing to see the upside of having access to so many different cultures from within Australia but unfortunately there are still more than enough people who don’t have any interest in anything other than what they already have and it seems as though there is no way of changing their minds. They are the ones who will always fight against the positives that come with globalisation. (Also you may want to pay closer attention to your grammar, it’s a bit off)
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your introduction which directly discussed Globalisation and your second paragraph had a great use of reference but the grammar in this part is off, particularly the first sentence and the one regarding the Vietnam influx of immigrants. However your use of drastic statements has a great effect and your final statements regarding cultures add a real splash of reality to the blog post.
ReplyDeleteYou have given an interesting argument and good points in relation to the idea of making cultures. I do agree with your statement about people in Australia should looking at the good sides of multiculturalism. But it would be great that if you could be more specific and give examples of what are the advantages and disadvantages to be multiculturalism in Australia.
ReplyDeleteI quite enjoyed reading your post, well done Eloise. The points you have raised about the inheritance of many different new cultures into Australia possibly scaring some people to believe that our country is on the brink of cultural destruction was a very strong issue to raise. As mentioned in your last paragraph, cultures from around the world can in-fact be beneficial to our way of life in Australia. I agree with what you've said and overall think you have done a nice job.
